Sosu celebrates Senior night with friends

Senior night for student athletes is a touching ritual for many. It’s a recognition of individuals in their final year, a moment where the spotlight is on them and the people they choose to walk with.

The celebrations are filled with cheers, love and joy. For some, this is the moment when it all sinks in — that melancholic feeling, realizing that the journey is almost at an end. It’s the rush of memories from their years on the field and in the classroom, and the bittersweet acceptance that a new chapter has arrived sooner than they imagined.

Gameday

On Sept. 20, Newman University held its senior night for the women’s soccer team. Thirteen Jets were honored before kickoff against Southern Nazarene University, celebrating all that they have accomplished throughout their time in college.

The 2025-26 season marks head coach Dylan Gruntzel’s fourth leading the Jets. Several senior teammates have been guided entirely under Gruntzel’s tenure.

Upon reflection of his time with the seniors, he said, “The best part is seeing them grow up into amazing young women who will be amazing in the world. Sometimes as athletes, we think we are here just to grow as a soccer player, when in reality, our growth as a person is what carries a bigger impact.”

Gruntzel’s one word to describe the soon-to-be graduates: “caring.”

“The group has gone through team struggles and their own, but I loved how they cared for everyone around them and could help find solutions or guidance. I believe the world needs more good people, and this class will be great for society. I cannot wait to see their impact on this world,” he said.

Gruntzel challenges each class to leave it better than when they found it. The women’s class of 2026 achieved just that.

“It’s easy to get caught up in wins and losses, but compared to where the program was four years ago to where it is now, the program has developed in a lot of ways, and it started with this group,” said Gruntzel.

Newman University and its record-breaking men’s soccer team

On Oct. 11, the Newman men’s soccer team hosted Harding University during the Newman Jets senior night

A frantic, entertaining, titanic battle saw three red cards and eight yellow cards, ending in a share for the points. In the aftermath of a dog fight, the Jets had to settle for a 1-1 draw. Yohsuke Ono smashed home an equalizer in the 79th minute for nine-man Newman.

Before the midst of war on the soccer field, however, 18 players from the class of 2026 were celebrated for their efforts at Newman University.

The 2025-26 season marks head coach Victor Domingues’ third year leading the Jets. Several of the seniors this year have been coached by Domingues throughout all their time at college — some even following him to Newman from his previous institution.

Domingues praised his seniors, saying, “Seeing them grow from their first year into leaders who will soon be graduates has been amazing. The underclassmen now look up to these seniors because they lead by example. They’re in our leadership group, doing all the work that no one usually wants to do — carry, clean, pick up equipment.”

He continued, “All of that, combined with top attitude, sets a good example for the younger players. That is really important because it contributes heavily to the success of Newman men’s soccer, enabling us to reach new heights, continue to break records, and contribute to the culture of chasing excellence.”

He emphasized his players’ daily discipline and determination — even when it may be challenging to excel.

“It shows their maturity to focus on one day or game at a time, and it has been an absolute pleasure watching them grow, compete and achieve their individual and team goals,” said Domingues.
