Thank you to our veterans.

Academic Student Support Services and ASC Community Leader Scholars teamed up for a special project to benefit our military members by writing letters and notes of encouragement to veterans.

Students had many different opportunities to create a greeting of their own. Tables were set up at different locations and times, and volunteers encouraged passers-by to stop and thank a vet.supplies used to create cards of thanks and encouragement to our brothers and sisters in service.

“There were so many [cards] made that the students had to come back and get more supplies,” said Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs Rosemary Niedens. “They wanted to have options for everybody, so they went to the athletic teams, the Mabee Dining Center, Eck, and the student center so they would have a lot of different coverage.”

“It was an event that was included in Student Success Week and I wanted to cover all aspects of the whole person,” explained Coordinator of Early Intervention and Testing Services Debbie Haslam. The Student Success events included academic advice, some touching up on the spirit, a presentation from Campus Ministry, and service.

“Since Newman is a very service oriented school, I wanted something that would encompass service, so that’s where the idea for the project came from,” said Haslam. The undertaking also acted as a service project for a class of senior students.

The project resulted in more than 325 completed greetings which will be mailed to veterans and current active duty military.
