After a whopping 18 years, Newman University is welcoming back the alumnae of Sacred Heart Academy for a reunion on Thursday, June 22.

“We are extending the invitation to anyone who graduated from Sacred Heart Academy or attended and considers themselves an alum,” said Sr. Therese Wetta, ASC. “We are also inviting any faculty members from the Academy who are still around and would like to attend.”

Activities include brunch, dinner and a special honoring of the anniversary classes celebrating 50, 60 and even 70-year reunions. There will also be a photo slideshow presentation to reminisce on and relive some of the memories that were created long ago.

To add to the festivities, there will be an archival display of academy days located in the Caritas Room in Sacred Heart Hall. The display will have photos, old yearbooks, mementos, jackets and other archival items. Attendees can enjoy a golf cart campus tour, and alumnae will also get the chance to gather ‘round for campus ghost stories and refreshments.

“One neat addition to this year’s reunion is that there will be a whiteboard to honor those from the academy who have passed,” said Director of Alumni Relations and Annual Giving Sarah Strole. “This gives alumni the opportunity to put names up on the board along with any quotes, passages, etc. that they choose.”

The Academy Reunion Planning Committee and Alumni Relations are partnering up to have this event coincide with the Newman Alumni Weekend, which will take place Friday, June 23 through Sunday, June 25.

“This was a deliberate choice so that alumni could connect and celebrate with the Academy on Thursday,” Wetta said. “And because Academy alums are older, we decided it would be beneficial to have more than one day available for them.”

“The last Academy reunion we had was in 1999,” Wetta said. “When the last 50th class had their reunion, we said that next year we would do an all-academy reunion. We made that promise, so we wanted to honor it and do it.”

The planning committee anticipates that around 75 people will attend the academy reunion. Fifty-five individuals have signed up for the reunion so far, and registration is extended until June 9.

“We are asking that people register by June 9 to help us estimate the numbers for meals, but we will welcome anyone at any time,” Strole said.
