The Newman Jets are busy! Read about how they competed last week as well as what to look for this week.

Last Week’s Recap

Volleyball: The Jets earned two dominating road victories, picking up two sweeps of Panhandle State last weekend in Goodwell, Okla. The Jets defeated OPSU, 3-0 (25-19, 25-13, 25-14) Friday night, then completed the sweep with a 3-0 (25-14, 25-18, 25-11) win on Saturday afternoon. Angie Bennett had no problem finding holes in the OPSU defense, picking up 20 kills on 33 attempts for a .515 hitting percentage over the weekend. Bennett and Chelsey Potter posted nine kills to lead the Jets in Friday’s match, while Bennett’s 11 kills in Saturday’s game was a match high. Potter led the Jets in digs for the weekend, finishing with 12 digs on Friday before recording six in Saturday’s finale. Caroline Painter’s 51 kills over the weekend also led the Jets. Newman is now 11-19 on the season, and fifth in the Heartland Conference with a record of 6-6 in conference play. Wins at Dallas Baptist and Texas-Permian Basin this weekend would put the Jets in the Heartland Conference tournament for the first time.

Women’s Soccer: The Jets made their first appearance in the NCAA South Central Regional Rankings last week, debuting at No. 10 after sweeping the previous weekend. In their only game last weekend, Newman dropped a 3-1 decision to Dallas Baptist Friday afternoon at Wilkins Field. Kayde Kluge scored Newman’s only goal of the match, taking advantage of a blocked shot by a team mate, and putting the ball into the net for the first goal of the game, and her second goal of the season. It didn’t get any better for the Jets in their final match of the 2009 season, as Newman dropped a 3-0 decision to Texas-Permian Basin Tuesday afternoon at Wilkins Field. With the loss, the Jets end the season with an overall record of 8-7-4, and a 6-4-2 mark in Heartland Conference play.

Men’s Soccer: Newman’s men’s soccer team struggled to get its offense rolling last weekend, dropping two straight matches on the road to Heartland Conference opponents. The Jets dropped a 2-0 decision at St. Edward’s, then suffered a 4-0 setback at Incarnate Word on Sunday. With the losses, Newman is now 3-11-3 overall, and 2-6-1 against Heartland Conference competition. The Jets have just one game remaining on their 2009 schedule; a trip to Odessa, Texas, next weekend to take on Texas-Permian Basin.

Wrestling: Fugate Gymnasium was the site of the Red-Blue Duals last weekend. The intra-squad dual was the Jets’ lone pre-season tune-up for the regular season.
