Lip-Sync Battle

On Wednesday Feb. 22, the Newman Campus Activities Board hosted the Ultimate Lip Sync Battle in Performance Hall inside the De Mattias Fine Arts Center.

As the lights dimmed, one could feel the curiosity building up in the auditorium. When the music began, a familiar figure appeared on stage with a letter jacket, sunglasses, and duckbill hat dancing and singing to the catchy tune, “Welcome to my house” by Flo Rida. But this was no Flo Rida; this was the Dean of Students Levi Esses taking up the stage!

After a random fleeing from the stage, other familiar figures such as Director of Residence Life Scott Mudloff and Graduate Assistantship-Diversity Devin Smith took the stage dressed up as the Spice Girls performing their big 1996 song, “Wannabe.” They had the crowd entertained, laughing, and cheering them on.

Teams that competed throughout the Lip Sync Battle were:

The Gaggle (CAB):

  • Luke Sponsel
  • Brandon Steiner
  • Makaylah Perkins
  • Allison Albert
  • Anthony Navarrete
  • Anna Dinh
  • Claire Setter
  • Xime Name

The All Nighters (RA’s):

  • Madison McCollum
  • Gabriella Rizzi
  • Nate Razafindrabe
  • Hannah Rood
  • Imkleen Meyer

Destiny’s Toddler:

  • Martina Viale
  • Emily Larkin
  • Marisa Zayat
  • Courtney Klaus

The Gaggle was the first to inhabit the stage. Singing a medley of popular songs that included, “Hips Don’t Lie” by Shakira, and “Fergalicious” by Fergie, the group accompanied their songs with flower petals, Skittles, and flips, which drew screams and applause from the crowd.

The All Nighters, after some games with the hilarious Sloppy Joes, performed “Call Me Maybe” by Carly Rae Jepson, making the song a little bit more bearable to listen to.

After the All Nighters, rockstars Destiny’s Toddler commanded the stage with Smash Mouth’s “All Star,” as the crowd headbanged and rocked along with them.

After all was sang and done, the judges were left with a difficult decision as to who the winners of the night were. After a few minutes of deciding, The Gaggle group won the judges’ eyes and ears, winning the group the golden trophy.

The fun did not stop there though! After the battle, students were invited to have pizza and join in the pep-rally, followed by bubble soccer. This was a great second day of Homecoming Week.

Go Jets!
