The Newman University Alumni Association is calling for a “thanksgiving card shower” for alumna Madeleine Kisner, ASC.Sister Madeleine is currently hospitalized at Via Christi-St. Francis and will be released to the ASC Wichita Center under hospice care on Friday, Nov. 13 following diagnosis of an inoperable carcinoma.
Alumni Association Vice President Chris Siefers recalled her first encounter with Sr. Madeleine during a recruitment visit to the Newman campus. “My mother and I sat in on one of her classes, and my mother was so impressed she wanted to enroll, too,” Siefers said. “Anyone who had her will remember her dynamic teaching methods.”
Cards and letters may be addressed to Madeleine Kisner, ASC at ASC Wichita Center, 1165 Southwest Blvd., Wichita, KS 67213. E-mail messages and/or memories sent to [email protected] will also be printed and presented to her. “If your memory is written in haiku, all the better,” said Seifers, recalling one of Sr. Madeleine’s favorite poetic forms.

A 1945 graduate of Sacred Heart Academy and a 1957 graduate of Sacred Heart College, Sister Madeleine served on the Kansas Newman College faculty as professor of English and Creative Writing from 1975 through 1991. After her retirement from teaching she became an avid researcher of Cardinal John Henry Newman and is a recognized Newman Scholar. She amassed a significant collection of works by and about Newman, which is available in Dugan Library. She also served the Wichita State University Newman Center for approximately 10 years beginning in 1997.
