The horrific morning of Sept. 11, 2001, unfurled into a day that will never be forgotten.

Newman adjunct professor Cary Conover, who lived and worked as a freelance photographer in New York City at the time, still remembers waking up to the sound of his neighbor pounding on his door.

As soon as his neighbor explained what happened, Conover grabbed his camera and headed to the roof of his apartment. There, he captured the moments before and after the second plane hit the Twin Towers.

Now, 25 years later, Conover has compiled several photographs of 9/11 through his personal lens.

“No shortage of thoughts, but this video shows a bit more of the context of my experiences of that day,” he wrote in a recent Facebook post.

Looking back, Conover remembers how committed he and fellow photographers were in documenting the aftermath in New York City.

“We (photographers) refused to be victims of this,” Conover said. “Even though we saw it and it affected us, what we wanted to do most was simply contribute to the visual record of it.”
