Circle K International (CKI) is accepting new and gently used clothing items now through Nov. 18 to support ShowerUp Wichita.

ShowerUp Wichita is a mobile shower unit to help those experiencing homelessness. Its mission is to “shower grace, hope and love” by providing individuals with an opportunity for a hot shower and a space for basic hygiene.

According to ShowerUp Wichita’s website, there are between 750 and 1,200 men, women and children experiencing homelessness in Sedgwick County alone.

Newman CKI president Ashley Dinh regularly volunteers for the organization on Sunday mornings and felt called to host a clothing drive through the campus club.

“I love volunteering at ShowerUp because I am able to interact with so many people and gain new friendships and through this clothing drive, I wanted to bring more of the Newman community to come join ShowerUp,” Dinh said.

Requested donation items include:

  • Jackets/ coats
  • Beanies
  • Underwear (new only)
  • Jeans (men and women)
  • Pants (men and women)
  • Tennis shoes (adult)
  • T-shirts
  • Socks
  • Belts
  • Under shirts
  • Sweatshirts

Donation boxes are located in each of the Newman residence halls, as well as on the main floors of Bishop Gerber Science Center, Eck Hall and the Dugan Library.

On Nov. 20, members of CKI plan to partner with ShowerUp and distribute the items. Any faculty, staff, students or alumni are welcome to sign up to join in this volunteering opportunity.

Dinh added, “The winter season is coming and we want the homeless community to stay warm during the winter months.”
