Newman University will present the musical “Mamma Mia!” Nov. 15-18 in the De Mattias Performance Hall.
This well-known musical features songs from Swedish band ABBA. “Mamma Mia!” is the story of a young girl growing up in the Greek islands who secretly invites to her wedding three men from her mother’s past in hopes of finding her real father.
Newman senior Taylore Rose will portray the mother, Donna Sheridan, and Rebekah Lipinski fills the role of daughter Sophie. Dakota Heard, Austin Schwartz and Blake Lee play the three possible fathers. A special guest, Newman University Chaplain Father John Fogliasso, will join the cast of 27 on stage playing the role of the priest.
Director of Music Deanne Zogleman is directing and choreographing the musical while her close friend Paul Graves directs the music portion.
“Theater is my passion and I love working with my talented students and seeing their characters come alive,” said Zogleman.
Rehearsals began Sept. 17 and the cast and crew have spent countless hours since then perfecting the show. In the weeks leading up to the show, cast and crew practice 3-4 hours each week night.
The performance will take place Nov. 15-17 at 8 p.m. and Nov. 18 at 2 p.m. Tickets are $12 for the general public, $10 for seniors and military, $5 for Newman faculty, staff and non-Newman students and Newman students get in free with their student ID. Tickets will only be available at the door.
“It’s ‘Mamma Mia!’ — it’s a party!” said Zogleman. “Everyone knows the songs and it’s such a great show.”
