The academic year is drawing to a close as graduating students begin studying for finals and preparing themselves to transform society.
Senior Jets will be celebrating their baccalaureate Mass at 6 p.m. Friday, May 11, at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, 430 N. Broadway St.in Wichita, Kansas.
Two commencement ceremonies will take place Saturday, May 12, at Central Community Church, 6100 W. Maple St. in Wichita, Kansas — the undergraduate ceremony at 10 a.m and the graduate ceremony at 3 p.m.
Planning for the graduation ceremonies begins about one year in advance. A committee of more than 10 staff and faculty meet regularly throughout the year to arrange all the details.
Preparation for the big day includes event day plans, program creation, organizing the ordering of regalia and arranging for entertainment.
To make sure both important events run smoothly, student marshals have been appointed to escort graduates and faculty through the baccalaureate and commencement exercises.
Administrative Assistant Laura Beck explained, “Different departments throughout the university have recommended some exceptional student leaders and service scholars to be a student marshal at Newman’s 2018 ceremonies. It is a rewarding service opportunity and student marshals are key to the success of all the small details that make such a special event run smoothly.”
