Elle Johnson spent four years as a student-athlete at Newman University, representing the women’s soccer team while majoring in biology. In spring 2025 she proudly graduated with her bachelor’s degree — an achievement that demonstrated perseverance, adaptability and courage.

A home away from home
Originally from London, Johnson decided to pursue her passion for soccer and science and made the leap across the pond by joining the Newman Jets.
She explained, “One of the main factors when choosing a university was the soccer program. It allowed me to play the sport I love while getting my degree.”
Like many students, Johnson also experienced challenges along the way. But ultimately, those challenges made her a stronger individual.
“Adjusting to the new culture was something I struggled with at first, but over time I got used to it,” she admitted. “The friends I made at Newman made me feel so welcome and loved. The soccer team really became my second family.”

Lessons on and off the pitch
Balancing all the requirements of athletics and academics can be overwhelming, but Johnson takes great pride in having accomplished so much throughout her time at Newman.
On the day of her graduation from Newman in May, she said, “My athletic stole represents my hard work and commitment to both my sport and my degree.”
She also recognized how much she had grown during her time in Wichita.
“I was able to develop as a player and a person by bettering my skills in teamwork, communication and leadership,” Johnson said.

Inspiring the next generation
As a Newman graduate, Johnson continues to make an impact through coaching young athletes back home in England.
“I want to create an inclusive environment where every child feels valued and cared for, no matter their background or situation,” she said. “I hope that the hands-on experience I have will benefit the lessons of teamwork, respect and equality.”
Reflecting on her journey, she is grateful for the growth and community she found.
“Traveling across the world to study and compete was a big change, but an exciting one,” Johnson said. “Newman gave me a second family and experiences that I will always remember.”

For Johnson, crossing continents meant that Newman University became more than just a place to earn a degree; it became a place of lifelong memories and friends for a lifetime.
