Newman University will present Waitman Beorn, Ph.D., director of the Virginia Holocaust Museum in Richmond, Va., as the Fall History Speaker. Born will speak at 7 p.m., Nov. 2 in the Newman University Dugan-Gorges Conference Center. His talk is titled “Resistance and Oppression: Daily Life in The Janowska Camp.” The event is free and open to the public.
Beorn is a graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point. He also served in Iraq before leaving the U.S. Army in 2005.
According to his website, Beorn earned his Ph.D. in history in 2011 from the University of North Carolina. His main focus was on the German Army’s complicity in the Holocaust, particularly in area of the former Soviet Union. Beorn has published one book, numerous articles in journals concerning European history, won multiple awards, and is a consultant to the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum.
