A full week of homecoming fun up ahead

Newman University’s homecoming week will begin Feb. 15. The week is always jam-packed with fun activities and opportunities to celebrate Jet pride and this year is no different.

Homecoming week events are as follows:

Monday, Feb. 15 | Show your Newman Pride

A door decorating contest will be held for student organizations, staff and faculty.

Staff and faculty can choose to decorate their department door and each student organization will decorate their advisor’s door on campus to showcase their Newman pride.

Decorators can begin Feb. 12 and must complete their door by 5 p.m. Feb. 15. Each door will be graded by three judges using a rubric that evaluates creativity and the creator’s ability to showcase their mission and goals.

A sign-up form will be sent to student, staff and faculty emails.

Wednesday, Feb. 17 |Ash Wednesday Mass

Mass will be held in St. John’s Chapel at 12:05 p.m. to celebrate Ash Wednesday.

Feb. 17| Softball vs. Northwestern Oklahoma State

The softball team will take on Northwestern Oklahoma State at 2 and 4 p.m. on the Newman University softball field.

Feb. 17 | Strong Black Lead Showing

This event is part of the Strong Black Lead series being held throughout Black History Month. “Black Panther” will play at 6:30 p.m. The event will take place in the Dugan-Gorges Conference Center.

Popcorn, candy and water will be provided.

Thursday, Feb. 18 |Homecoming Game Watch Party

Student Affairs will provide a tailgate-themed dinner, photo booth, and a live-stream of the basketball games in the Dugan-Gorges Conference Center on homecoming night.

The attendance policy for games differs this year due to COVID-19 so students unable to attend the game in-person will still be able to enjoy the game and homecoming atmosphere.

The women’s game against Northeastern Oklahoma begins at 5:30 p.m. and the men’s begins at 7:30 p.m. in Fugate Gymnasium.

The homecoming king and queen crowning ceremony will take place in the gymnasium at halftime of the men’s game.

Friday, Feb. 19 |Pie Your Leader

Students will have the opportunity to pie a Newman leader in the Fugate Student Center from 9 until 11 a.m.

Feb. 14-19 | Jets Give Back

Jets Give Back is a competition among staff, faculty and students to fill the Jets Resource Hub. A donation spot will be located in the Fugate Student Center and the Newman community is invited to donate pantry and hygiene items.

Saturday, Feb. 20 |Senior Day Games

Women’s basketball will honor their senior players at the 1:30 p.m. game.

Men’s basketball will honor their seniors at their 3:30 p.m. game.

Both teams will take on Rogers State in Fugate Gymnasium.

Tuesday, Feb. 23 | Virtual ‘Hot Ones Challenge’

*Moved from Tuesday, February 16 due to weather.

Leaders of the Newman University and Wichita communities will take on a spicy wings challenge. Newman University Student Government Association President Gabrielle Altenor, Wichita Police Chief Gordon Ramsay and Wichita Young Professionals Program Director Alejo Cabral will be interviewed by Diversity Roundtable Ambassadors as they eat wings that get spicier as the interview progresses. The event will be live-streamed on the Student Life Facebook page at 6 p.m.
