Homecoming Week runs Feb. 21-27, features new voting process

Feb 04, 2016

Newman University is gearing up for an eventful February. The university’s annual tradition of Heritage Month continues with many engaging events planned to help the community celebrate, and Student Life is no exception.

Student Life will contribute to the festivities with a fun and exciting Winter Homecoming for students. The official Homecoming week is Feb. 21-27, but there will be events leading up to Homecoming as well.

Starting on Feb. 8, the Campus Activities Board (CAB) is hosting a Sheet Decorating Event. Groups, clubs, departments and organizations can attend the event to decorate a sheet with various art supplies to hang in the De Mattias Fine Arts Center and the Gorges Atrium in support of Newman University, the Jets and the men’s and women’s basketball teams playing in the Homecoming games.

On Feb. 15, the voting process for the Homecoming Court begins. It will be distributed through an online survey the Student Life team will oversee. Voters will get a list of every senior and get to vote for five candidates for both king and queen. The process will be open until Feb. 16, and the Homecoming Court will be announced on Feb. 17.

Kicking off the official Homecoming week, Student Life will hold a celebration for Cardinal John Henry Newman’s birthday on Feb. 21 with birthday cake in the Heritage Room in Sacred Heart Hall after evening Mass.

On Feb. 22, voting for the Homecoming king and queen begins with another online survey. Voting will last two days (Feb. 22-23). Students will get to vote for one candidate for king and one candidate for queen. The official coronation of the Homecoming king and queen will happen on Feb. 25 at the evening basketball games. Before the basketball game, there will be dinner offered in the Gorges Atrium, and shirts will be given away — provided by Student Life and CAB at the Homecoming game.

Throughout Homecoming week, CAB and other student organizations will stage events, including the popular High Tea event on Feb. 23. See the complete schedule online, and check your school email to stay up-to-date with information and reminders for all the fun happenings with Winter Homecoming!
