Born and raised in Ford County’s small but charming Dodge City, Hugo Hernandez became a hometown leader, inspired through music, education and his community.

A proud alumnus of Newman University, Hernandez exemplifies the mission of transforming society for the better. When he first learned about Newman University in an outreach program at Dodge City Community College, he said, “It seemed more feasible to me to get my degree by staying home. It was a great experience.”

A new chapter

After two years at his hometown community college, Hernandez made the leap to Wichita to pursue a major in elementary education. The decision seemed simple, as many of Hernandez’s family members took a similar path and, he said, “it was great to see them in a leadership role.”

Newman University provided the perfect tools for Hernandez to sculpt himself into the leader he is today.

“I learned a lot about being in a leadership position in some of the courses that I took,” Hernandez said. “Being in a leadership position means you need to be aware of different learning styles. I believe those teachings will always be of good use both in and out of the workplace.”

In August 2024, Hernandez began a new role as director of Main Street Dodge City, a nonprofit organization under Dodge City/Ford County Development Corp.

It is an exciting opportunity for him to use the leadership skills that he acquired along his journey at Newman University.

The nonprofit role allows Hernandez to combine his skills, talents and values close to his heart — by serving his community, supporting small businesses and organizing events, Hernandez helps to bring life to his hometown’s historic downtown district

Hernandez said, “I think the most rewarding part about this job is that I get to be really involved with my community. I’m passionate about being able to help our small businesses and seeing Dodge City thrive.”

Musical endeavors

Hernandez’s inspiration is music.

A guitarist since middle school, he became a member of a jazz band during his collegiate years. He dabbled in drums and bass guitar, and music has remained a meaningful outlet throughout his life. He enjoys the emotional release that it provides.

“When you perform those songs in front of people and you see that they genuinely enjoy your art, it’s an incredible feeling,” he said. “It’s a very fun and relieving outlet for me.”

Transforming society

When asked what transforming society for the better means, Hernandez offered a humbling and thoughtful perspective.

“We live in a world where there’s constant negativity and misinformation being thrown around, especially in the media,” he said. “I think if the general population took some time to really explore and learn about what’s happening in their community, you would find that there’s more positive happening than there is negative.”

Hernandez believes making a difference starts with small, consistent acts of kindness and service.

“Help is help,” Hernandez said. “Think forward and think positively is what I always tell myself and others. There are people out there transforming society for the better daily, I see it in my workplace all the time.”

Hernandez said he is excited for the future, particularly when it comes to his passions of developing his community and love for music. He also wants to be an open book for others.

“I personally feel like I’m a great resource for a variety of things, so if anyone ever wants to chat, you are welcome to send me an email,” Hernandez said.
