The Hispanic American Leadership Organization (HALO) and Jets for Life will host a panel discussion and Q&A session titled “Know Your Rights” at 6:30 p.m. on March 6 in the Bishop Gerber Science Center, Room 105, at Newman University.

Spanish translation services will be available, and refreshments and snacks will be provided. The event is free and open to the public, including members of the Wichita community.

The event will feature immigration attorney Genesis Mercado-Arias, founder of the ELLA Initiative, and Sulma Arias, executive director of People’s Action. Both panelists are connected to HALO’s secretary, Natalia Lopez — Arias is her aunt and Mercado-Arias is her cousin.

HALO President Melissa Arguijo emphasized the importance of community unity and education on immigrant rights, stating that the event is inspired by the phrase “siempre unidos,” which means “always united.”

“Unity within the community is necessary during difficult times,” Arguijo said. “Students, staff, faculty, alumni and community members should attend because participation not only brings awareness to the issues affecting the immigrant community but also encourages you to be knowledgeable on how to protect yourself and your rights. The significance in attending displays your support in alliance with our marginalized communities.”

Know Your Rights flyer reads "Stay empowered, get organized, be empowered."
