In the Bag

Artist Seth Blume will exhibit “In the Bag?” at Steckline Gallery during Wichita’s Final Friday event March 29. The exhibit portrays elements of fun and mystery for viewers.

Blume, a Wichita State University graduate, lives in Wichita, Kansas. He is influenced by nature, found objects and the obscure.

Blume is experienced with various mediums such as installations, sculpture, murals and film. He prefers to make sculptures from found objects, which is what “In the Bag?” will feature.

The sculptures in the exhibit are found mixed media concealed in yellow plastic bags. The artist hopes the experience becomes interactive for guests visually and mentally β€” guessing what’s in the bag.

Director of Steckline Gallery Shannon Johnston looks forward to Final Friday each month. It’s her favorite part of her job, she said.

“It’s that moment where all the work the artist has been doing and all my efforts combine into an experience for the audience. Having people come to the gallery and connect with the work is what my job is all about.”

Johnston said she’s excited to finish her first year as gallery director with two great shows. “I’m excited to have Seth Blume at Steckline with ‘In the Bag?’ and hope the audience enjoys the playful quality of Seth’s work.” she said.

There will be an Art for Lunch presentation noon to 1 p.m. Tuesday, April 2, in the gallery. A light lunch will be served on a first-come, first-served basis. Guests are also welcome to bring their lunch. This event is free and reservations are not required.

The Steckline Gallery is located inside the De Mattias Fine Arts Center on the Newman campus, 3100 McCormick. The gallery is open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., or by appointment. For more information, email Director of Steckline Gallery Shannon Johnston at [email protected].
