Newman University athletics had an exciting end to last week’s competitions with two Lady Jets breaking school records.

Melissa Ortiz of Women’s Cross Country had a time of 18:47 in the women’s 5K run during the Heartland Conference Championships on Oct. 20 in San Antonio, Texas, setting a new school record and earning her All-Conference honors. Vanessa Slater of Women’s Golf shot a personal best and school record of 71 in the second round of the Oklahoma Women’s Intercollegiate Tournament hosted by Cameron University in Duncan, Okla., on Oct.16. Her two-round total of 151 placed her 15th in the field and led the Jets.

“We are very excited for both Melissa and Vanessa on their individual accomplishments,” commented Athletics Director Kevin Ulwelling. “It is a credit to their hard work and dedication to their sport. Congratulations to the Women’s Golf and Women’s Cross Country Teams and coaches.”

Other Jets earning honors during the Cross Country Heartland Conference Championships were senior Blake Henry earning All-Conference and freshmen Kyle Graber and Brock Mintie earning Honorable Mention.
