In conjunction with the NCAA Division II Heartland Conference Cross-Country Championships, track star Jim Ryun will speak at 4 p.m., Friday, Oct. 19 in the Performance Hall inside the De Mattias Fine Arts Center on the Newman University campus. The event is free and open to the public.
Ryun, the first high school student runner to break the four-minute mile, is a three-time Olympian, five-time world record holder, and Sports Illustrated “Sportsman of the Year” award recipient. ESPN named Ryun the best high school athlete ever. He is also a member of the Kansas Sports Hall of Fame and former member of the U.S. House of Representatives.
The event is co-sponsored by Newman University, GoRun Wichita, the Greater Wichita Area Sports Commission, the Heartland Conference Cross-Country Championships and the DoubleTree by Hilton Wichita Airport.
The Heartland Conference Championships will be run beginning at 9:30 a.m., Saturday, Oct. 20 at the Cessna Activity Center, 2744 George Washington Boulevard.
