When Karem Gallo crossed the stage at Newman University’s commencement in May 2024, she wasn’t just celebrating her graduation. She was celebrating a decade-long journey filled with resilience, ambition and a relentless pursuit of diverse passions.

Gallo’s path to a bachelor’s degree was far from traditional. After earning an associate degree in 2013, life threw twists and turns. Yet she remained determined to continue her education, even if it meant taking the long road.

“There were a lot of ups and downs,” Gallo said. “But I’m finally here.”

Building a career on unique foundations

Graduating with a major in interdisciplinary studies and a focus on religion and business, Gallo’s academic background is as varied as her career.

Her professional life includes roles as a real estate agent, art studio owner and now, a newly minted executive director. She was recently appointed as the head of the High Plains Heritage Foundation, a nonprofit organization based in Liberal, Kansas.

“I’m excited to merge all my disciplines together,” Gallo said about her new role. “I’ll be able to make a difference in the community, continue selling real estate, and still create art.”

The unlikely online student

Despite her unique route, Gallo’s Newman experience was anything but distant. As a nontraditional student pursuing her degree entirely online, Gallo never set foot on campus until graduation day.

“This is my first time on campus, actually,” she revealed with a smile on commencement. “But I never felt disconnected. Even though I was an online student, the instructors always made me feel like they truly cared.”

It’s this personal connection that made Gallo’s time at Newman University stand out.

“The support I received was phenomenal,” she said. “Even if they’d never met me, I always felt like they were there for me.”

A passion for community and the arts

Gallo’s passion for art and community service has also earned her a seat on the Kansas Arts Commission, a prestigious position that recognizes her contributions to the cultural landscape of the state. Her art studio in Liberal serves as a creative space and a hub for local artists and residents to engage with the arts.

With her new position at the High Plains Heritage Foundation, Gallo can expand her influence, blending her business acumen, artistic vision and commitment to community development.

“This role is the culmination of everything I’ve worked for,” she said. “It’s a chance to bring all my skills to the table and give back in a meaningful way.”

From pride to perseverance

As she reflected on her journey, Gallo’s pride was evident.

“I’m very proud of myself,” she said, her voice filled with emotion. “I looked at myself in the mirror before the ceremony and thought, ‘You did it. You overcame every obstacle.’”

This hard-earned success was symbolized by the moment she walked across the stage, holding a degree that represented years of determination, sacrifice and growth.

“It was more than just a diploma,” she said. “It was a testament to perseverance.”

Looking ahead

With her degree in hand and a wealth of experience, Gallo is poised to make an even greater impact in her community. Her journey is a reminder that education is not limited to a linear path and that blending diverse passions can lead to extraordinary opportunities.

For Gallo, the future is bright and full of promise.

“I’m ready to bring my unique perspective to everything I do,” she said confidently. “This is just the beginning of making a bigger difference.”
