Newman University has welcomed Michael “Mick” Cayless to the Institutional Advancement Office in the newly revamped role of corporate and foundation relations officer. Originally from Loughborough, England, he joins the university with a wealth of fundraising experience, a deep commitment to its mission and a passion for supporting its initiatives.
For Cayless, the role at Newman offers more than just a job — it’s a chance to contribute to a team effort.
“I’m excited to work at a larger organization and be part of an overall team, utilizing my strengths in fundraising,” Cayless said. “Newman University is well-regarded in Wichita, with a fantastic history, and I’m proud to be a part of it.”
Bob Beumer, vice president of advancement, is delighted to welcome Cayless to Newman.
“We’re thrilled to have Mick join the Institutional Advancement team,” Beumer said. “His proven expertise in fundraising and heartfelt alignment with our values will elevate our efforts to advance the university’s mission and impact through corporate partnerships and relationship development with local and regional foundations.”
Grant writing background
With a background in grant writing and development, Cayless emphasizes a thoughtful approach to securing support.
“A strong grant writer has to believe in what they’re writing,” he said. “They need to understand the goals of the grant and how both the organization and the funder benefit.”
His primary goal is to expand funding for Newman’s vital services through corporate and foundation streams, strengthening the university’s ability to serve its community.
Cayless has quickly embraced Newman’s faith-based mission, which aligns with his personal values.
“The camaraderie in the Institutional Advancement Office, the knowledge base here and the character of the people I’ve met stand out,” he said. “I see the university shaping students to live a Christian life and preparing future leaders.”
Getting to know Mick
Before joining Newman, Cayless spent a decade in prison ministry, meeting monthly with inmates at a correctional facility as part of a mentorship program. He now looks forward to engaging with the Newman community, including events like the recent Giving Day and attending basketball, soccer and baseball games — opportunities he sees as ideal for connecting with donors.
Outside of work, Cayless enjoys photography, particularly capturing landscapes that reflect his faith.
“When you photograph a landscape, you capture a moment of God’s creation,” he said. “It’s a ‘wow’ moment — the beauty is undeniable.”
He is a lifelong fan of English Premier League soccer, enjoys riding his motorcycle and currently is spending time renovating a home that he purchased last year.
Cayless met his wife, Celia, at a children’s camp in New York in 1989, and they married three years later. They have three adult children: Lauren, Jeffrey and Genevieve.
