Local middle school student-athletes attended a basketball tournament held at Newman University Dec. 27 – 29. The Christmas Classic 2007 included 8th grade girl teams from Holy Cross Lutheran School, St. Anne Catholic School, St. Peter Catholic School, St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic School and St. Francis of Assisi School. Eighth grade boy teams included Blessed Sacrament School, Christ the King School, St. Peter Catholic School, St. Jude Catholic School, St. Elizabeth Ann Seton School, and St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic School. More than 500 people attended the tournament each day.
In prior years, the Catholic School Athletic League (CSAL) had hosted a Christmas tournament for middle school students as a precursor to their basketball seasons. Vice President for Institutional Advancement Thomas E. Borrego discovered the interest of reviving the tournament when speaking with Brad Little, volunteer athletic director at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton School. “After visiting with the CSAL, it was decided that NU would start with an 8th grade-only tournament to see if there was interest and [Brad] was pleased to discover that 16 teams were excited about participating,” Borrego said.
“The kids really enjoyed the opportunity to compete over the holiday break,” Little said. “The facility was great and I want to thank Newman University for agreeing to host this event.”
