New student orientation begins for those living on campus with a move-in time and an orientation check-in period from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Friday. Students not living on campus can check in between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m.
Saturday’s activities begin at 8:30 a.m. with a welcome from Newman President Noreen M. Carrocci, Ph.D., followed by breakfast. Various orientation activities will then be held throughout the day. Family members will leave at 1:15 p.m. and the students will participate in a service project. The event concludes with a barbecue and “Party on the Quad” beginning at 7 p.m.
Orientation for transfer students begins on Saturday with breakfast at 8:30 a.m. followed by a greeting from the president. Since transfer students have college experience, many of the events are aimed at helping students become familiar with Newman in particular, and include talks from previous transfer students, lunch with faculty members, and a session on how to use Newman’s online system, JetStream. Transfer students will then join the “Party on the Quad” at 7 p.m.
International students participate in a five-day orientation process beginning Tuesday, August 17. Students will get a campus tour, learn about cultural adaptation, enroll in classes, learn about academics in America, and participate in information sessions, placement tests, and many other useful events to help them transition to life in a new country and a new school. They will then join the new student orientation Friday afternoon and continuing on that schedule through Saturday.
The fee for orientation is included in each student’s bill and covers activities, food and materials for the student and two guests. The fee for guests after the first two is $12 per person (children under 6 are free).
