Newman alum Clare Vanderpool to stage readings, signings of new novel

Newman University alumna Clare Vanderpool ’87 will appear at two upcoming readings and signings in Wichita for her new novel Navigating Early. The first event will be Saturday, Jan. 19 at Eighth Day Books, 2838 E. Douglas. An Open House will begin at 5 p.m., followed by a reading and book signing beginning at 7 p.m. The second reading and book signing will be at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 22 at Watermark Books, 4701 E. Douglas.

Vanderpool received the prestigious Newbery Medal in 2011 for her first novel, Moon Over Manifest. The medal is bestowed annually by the American Library Association to recognize excellence in American children’s literature. Vanderpool is the first Kansas author to receive the medal.

Her new book Navigating Early is set at the end of World War II, and concerns two boys who meet in a boarding school in Maine and embark on an adventure on the Appalachian Trail.
