Newman alumna Clare (Sander) Vanderpool ’87 has been selected to receive the 2011 John Newbery Medal for her book Moon Over Manifest, an historical fiction novel for middle-school readers.
According to the American Library Association website, The Newbery Award was the first children’s book award in the world, and is the best known children’s book award in the country. It is awarded annually by the Association for Library Service to Children, a division of the American Library Association, to the author of the most distinguished contribution to American literature for children.
Vanderpool and other children’s literature award winners were featured in the Jan. 11 issue of USA Today.
Vanderpool visited the Newman campus in November to share her “story behind the story,” including her inspiration for the novel and lessons learned on the road to publication. She was also the subject of an Alumni Profile in the Fall 2009 issue of Challenge magazine. To learn more about her read the story here.
