Newman University to present debut concert by new wind ensemble Dec. 11

Dec 07, 2011

The Newman University Music Department will present the first concert by the new Newman University Wind Ensemble, called “Joy! Festive Music Heralding the Coming of Christmas.” The concert will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 11 in Performance Hall, inside the De Mattias Fine Arts Center on the Newman campus. Admission to this one-hour concert is free.

“The Wind Ensemble is a brand new group on campus, grown out of the excitement of the students, faculty and staff who make up the Newman University Pep Band,” said Instrumental Music Director David A. Baxter. “Started three years ago, the Pep Band has given Newman musicians a great way to contribute to the life and spirit of the school. Forming an ensemble to let this group of enthusiastic musicians explore more significant music than what we perform at basketball games is a logical next step in the development of an instrumental music program at Newman.”

Baxter noted that the university has also begun a string ensemble, which will also perform at the Dec. 11 concert.
