Newman University’s campus chaplain, the Rev. Ed Herzog ’11, was recently featured in an episode of “The Newman Bond,” the official podcast of the university.

In this episode, Herzog shares how he was raised in a small, rural area in New York. When the time came to look for colleges, he explored many options, including schools in Hawaii and Florida. He ultimately chose Newman University because he wanted to play golf and liked the sense of community the school offered. Herzog’s dad had a strong feeling that Newman was the right place for him before he did.

Herzog admitted that he didn’t think much about the Catholic aspect of Newman when he first chose it. But over time, he found that the community and the faith experiences were very special.

“I like to say it was golf that brought me here and it was the faith that kept me here,” Herzog said. “That’s when Newman really became my home. It was not only having to go through a couple of the theology-based classes but also it was me meeting friends who are still my friends to this day. Even friends who are now priests with me.”

Herzog shares his journey into the priesthood, the value of time spent in silence and much more.
