Newman University welcomed 52 eager incoming students on Friday, April 22 at the first of four registration days to be held during the summer. The planned registration days give new students the opportunity to meet staff, finalize housing and financial aid, talk to advisors, register for classes and much more.
The day began with a welcome reception and check-in, while students and their family members enjoyed donuts and beverages. They were greeted by staff, took their seats and tuned in as staff shared the next steps needed to proceed in their newest adventure.
Assistant Director of Admissions Events and Welcome Center Manager Amanda Booth kicked things off with the introduction of Newman Pastor Father John Fogliasso, who presented the blessing and spoke to the students about the Newman values and the strong relationships they can look forward to making.
Students received information and insights from Dean of Students Levi Esses; Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs Michael Austin; Director of Student Activities Lauren Fontarum; Director of Residence Life Lucas Mullin; and Academic and International Advisor Ami Larrea.
At one point in the welcoming session, Esses encouraged the students to come to the front for a light-hearted meet and greet activity which resulted in the creation of special handshakes that students can use when they see their fellow classmates around campus.
Incoming freshman student Charles DeVorce, who will be majoring in art, is looking forward to a positive experience. “I’m here on a scholarship for Cross Country and my sister goes here, too,” said DeVorce. “I’ve met my coach and some of my teammates. Newman has good programs and I know it’ll be a good experience.”
Isaac Romaneschi, majoring in business, hopes to fulfill a dream of owning his own business. “I think it’s pretty welcoming and it’s a nice atmosphere. It’s not as intimidating as I thought it would be,” said Romaneschi. “I thought the campus was really good and it had a good theology, too. I’m going to major in business or entrepreneurship. My dream is to open my own business so I want to learn the skills to help toward my goal.”
The next Registration Day will take place on Friday, June 3. Students can register for any of the upcoming registration days online here. For more information, contact Admissions at 316-942-4291, ext. 2144, or [email protected].
