Five high school seniors were recently named Cardinal Newman Scholarship recipients — Newman University’s highest and most exclusive financial award — for the 2018-19 academic year.

These five students were among 26 candidates who were invited to campus on March 2 for in-person interviews with a selection committee. The interview is the last step of the selection process.

Along with an online application and essay, prospective recipients must have at least a 3.9 cumulative high school GPA and a 29 composite ACT score to be eligible for the award.

The scholarship, named for Blessed John Henry Cardinal Newman, is renewable for four years and is the most exclusive scholarship the university awards. The approximate value of all five awards given to the 2018 high school graduates total $585,200.

The five recipients are:

Kayla Garvert
Plainville High School
Plainville, Kansas

Carolina Mariscal
Wichita High School North

Shayla To
