Scooter’s Coffeehouse at Newman University will give students a pleasant surprise when they return to school next week – a Grand Opening celebration that will feature free coffee, free product samples, live music and more. The event takes place Tuesday, Jan. 19, from 7:30 a.m. to 8 p.m.
Scooter’s is located in the Marketplace area of the Dugan Library and Campus Center near the center of the Newman campus. The coffeehouse franchise features blended coffees, teas, fruit smoothies, specialty coffee drinks and food items, as well as Pizza Hut pizza-by-the-slice and NuWay crumbly burgers.
Scooter’s opened for business in November 2009 in a dining venue adjacent to the Newman Bookstore on the first floor of the Campus Center. Tolli Rasmussen, owner of the Scooter’s at Newman, said she wanted to wait until the new year to stage the official Grand Opening.
“This will be a Grand Opening and ‘Welcome Back’ for everyone on campus,” Rasmussen said. “I want to thank all the students for their support of Scooter’s since we opened last November, and everyone for making me feel a part of Newman University. I thought having a bust-out, all-day party would be a great way to celebrate Scooter’s at Newman and the first of a new year for students.”
Rasmussen said the Grand Opening festivities will include free brewed coffee, 50 percent off all specialty drinks, including fruit smoothies, lattes and cappuccino, and free samples of specialty drinks. The event will also feature live music, with various artists playing throughout the afternoon and evening hours.
Mark Dresselhaus, vice president for finance and administration at Newman, said the university has been pleased with Scooter’s presence in the campus center.
“We’ve been very happy with the products and service Scooter’s has offered, and the students have made many positive comments about it,” Dresselhaus said. “The Grand Opening should be a great treat to students as they start up a new semester.”

7:30 a.m. – 3 p.m. Friday
4 – 10 p.m. Sunday
