The Spring Instrumental Concert “Soundtracks: Magical Music from the Movies” will be presented at 3 p.m. on Sunday, April 17 in the Performance Hall, inside the De Mattias Fine Arts Center on the Newman campus.
Sponsored by the Newman University Music Department, Soundtracks features the Newman University Instrumental Ensemble, which is a growing conclave of students of all majors gathering together with a variety of instruments, including strings, brass, percussion, and piano. The group meets twice a week on Tuesday and Thursdays to practice and refine pep band and orchestra music. Cindy Thompson, a Music Department faculty member, conducts the ensemble.
Soundtracks: Magical Music from the Movies will present orchestrations from movie soundtracks and scores. One example is “Under the Sea” from Disney’s “The Little Mermaid.” Among the students playing in the concert is the ensembles’ pianist, freshman Claire Setter, and two graduating seniors, Megan Hemel and Wesley Williams.
Hemel has been playing flute in the ensemble since her freshman year. “Music was always my escape from my hectic schedule,” Hemel said. “I still love it as much as I did in high school. Newman’s band has really become a family [to me] and we bond over our love for music.”
Williams has also been involved with the ensemble for a number of years. “Band has given me the chance to continue playing the bass. I really hope to find more opportunities going forward.” Williams said, “But come see Soundtracks, because it will be really good and you’ll recognize a lot of the music.”
