An Art for Lunch, which includes a discussion with the artist and pizza lunch for Newman students, will take place Feb. 6 from noon to 1 p.m. “A Call to Care” will be on display Feb. 6-28. All events are free and open to the public.
About the exhibition
“A Call to Care” is a photographic exhibition that explores the disparities within the medical system, showcasing how tools meant to heal often do so through injury.
“Anchored in data yet profoundly human, the work highlights the inequalities within healthcare, with a particular focus on female identity,” artist Zirbel said. “The exhibition seeks to bridge the gap between health care providers and recipients. The images evoke a visceral response, where utilitarian medical instruments are overlaid with words of vulnerability and intimacy.”
Interview phrases and words from caregivers and patients are featured in the photographic works and encourage viewers to consider what is missing from the current medical system.
Zirbel hopes to spark dialogue around topics “too often shrouded in silence,” she said. “It aims to remind us that true healing begins with understanding.”
Zirbel earned her Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Wyoming, along with minors in museum studies and anthropology. She attained a Master of Fine Arts in photography from Arizona State University. Her artwork has been showcased in more than 40 exhibitions, both nationally and internationally.
