The Newman University Steckline Gallery will hold an opening reception 5 – 7 p.m. Friday, April 30 for “The Distance,” a conceptual installation by artist Annie Strader. The reception will be part of the Final Friday art gallery crawl. The exhibit, which will run through May 14, is the grand finale in the Steckline’s 2009-2010 season.
The gallery will host an “Art for Lunch” lecture from noon to 1 p.m. Tuesday, May 4, where Strader will be available to answer questions about the exhibit. This lecture is free and open to the public, with a light lunch available to the first 20 guests. Participants may also bring their own brown bag lunch.
Strader is an interdisciplinary artist who utilizes sculptural processes and video to create objects, installations and performances. In “The Distance,” she explores the “uncomfortable beauty” found in the space between one’s self and the things the self desires. Strader’s work has been exhibited in galleries across the nation. She was a visiting artist at Wichita State University from 2006-2009 and is currently an assistant professor of art at Sam Houston State University.
In addition to “The Distance” exhibit, Newman graduating art majors Mark Burke, Megan Cox, and Nick Abbot will present their Senior Art Show, “Jump,” in the De Mattias Fine Arts Center.
