Watching a play inside of a play isn’t something an audience gets to see every day, but when you watch “The Real Inspector Hound,” brought to you by Newman University’s theater department, you get to do just that.

“The Real Inspector Hound” will run 8 p.m. Thursday through Saturday, March 30-April 1, and 2 p.m. Sunday, April 2.

Tickets for “The Real Inspector Hound” can be purchased online or at the door for $10 for the general public; $5 for seniors, military, Newman faculty, staff and students (college age and below). Newman students get in free with their student I.D.

The play is about two movie critics reviewing a murder mystery, but find themselves entangled in it. Emily Maddux, playing Lady Muldoon, says “the audience should be prepared to laugh, I dare them to!”

Hunter Bartholomew, a junior majoring in secondary education, was cast in the role of Moon, one of the play critics reviewing the play. Mark Mannette, associate professor and director of theater, approached him about playing the character, so Bartholomew decided he would go for it.

Bartholomew says, “It is fun to see how his character responds to that and interacts with the play.”

“My favorite part of being in this cast would either be getting to try something new because I have not done too many comedies in my theater career or just being able to spend time with my friends to develop the show and characters with them,” says Bartholomew.

Maddux, who received her associate in radiologic technology from Newman in 2021, participated in many shows while earning her degree. She is excited to return for her performance in “The Real Inspector Hound” while she earns her degree in history with a minor in theater.

“I fell in love with the play’s concept as well as how each of the characters is unique,” Maddux says. She initially saw herself playing Moon but was also eyeing Lady Muldoon so she “was pleased when the cast list came out.”

Many of the cast members are also a part of the Sloppy Joe Improv team so they get the chance to “practice their comedic freedom.”

“This is my last show at Newman University where I get to act and I am thankful that I get to do it with such a talented group of people. As a bonus, I also get the privilege of calling them my friends,” says Maddux.

Austin Schwartz, a senior English and theater major, plays the part of Inspector Hound. Schwartz explained that during auditions, students read for multiple roles.

“So when it came to this production I actually wasn’t attached to any character, but I’m very happy with getting to portray the Inspector,” he said.

Schwartz has participated in many shows at Newman. He has worked with the entire cast before on other projects and always enjoys working with them.

“There is an energy that we all bring and it only grows as we feed off each other, and the comedic element this show has only helps,” says Schwartz.

Corbin Molina, a freshman majoring in chemistry, decided to shoot for whatever role fit him best. “Birdboot is a very eccentric character with a quite interesting personality. He’s ridiculous but fun,” says Molina. He is excited to bring this character to life on stage.

“The Real Inspector Hound” is directed by Mannette. He is most excited for the audience members to see “how the play is filled with surprises and messes with the expectations of the audience.”

“I love it when the performers come up with new ideas and incorporate them into the framework I have given them and especially when they own their parts,” says Mannette on his favorite part of seeing the cast play their roles.
