The Newman University Student Athlete Advisory Committee (S.A.A.C.) organized its second annual Ugly Sweater Run on Nov. 15 on the campus of Newman University. The event, which included 30 runners participating in the race and donations from students, faculty and staff, raised $820 for Make-A-Wish.
In addition to the runners and spectators who gathered on a cold November morning for the race, Santa Claus and Johnny Jet were on hand and helped give out the awards at the end.
S.A.A.C. President Bailey McGuffey donated small prizes and ornaments for the runners. Spangles also donated gift cards, which were given to the top performers, and J. Rae’s donated a shirt and gift card for the ugliest sweaters. In addition, Scooters provided hot chocolate and S.A.A.C. members teamed up with the Newman Athletic Department to bring cookies, fruits and vegetables to the participants.
Around 100 student-athletes helped organize, work, or donate for the run. Every sport at Newman was represented in some way: The volleyball team created signs and posters to cheer the runners on. The cross-country teams set up the course while the cheer and dance team took care of registration. Members from all teams were scattered along the course to direct the runners and cheer them on.
