Newman University will hold its 2020 spring commencement virtually at 3 p.m., May 8, on its website and social media channels.

The online graduation ceremony replaces the traditional in-person celebration that was postponed in April due to health concerns and government directives stemming from the pandemic.

Interim president Teresa Hall Bartels knows the health and safety of the community is paramount and believes Newman graduates need to be celebrated

“Commencement is the pinnacle of every academic year and to not be able to come together in person is a real letdown for students and our faculty, staff and administration. For members of the class of 2020, I know this is not an ideal way to close out their time at Newman. They deserve the opportunity to celebrate with classmates, teachers, friends and family.

“This class of undergraduate and graduate students have accomplished so much while at Newman and we look forward to the many ways they will go out and make a difference,” Bartels said.

An in-person celebration gathering will be arranged when it is safe to do so. University administration has been working with student government and campus leaders to determine a date and time for the gathering. Graduates are also invited to attend and walk during a future Newman commencement.

The virtual commencement can be viewed at newmanu.edu/graduation and on the university’s Facebook and YouTube channels.
