The women’s bowling team finished third at the sectional qualifier, which means the team will attend the Intercollegiate Team Championships tournament for the third year in a row.
The national tournament will take place April 19 to 21 at Sun Valley Lanes in Lincoln, Nebraska. In the 15 years of the program’s history, the team has attended this tournament 13 times.
Sophomore Ashton Anderson and freshman Kristen Machacek earned spots in the Intercollegiate Singles Championship starting April 17.
During the March sectionals, Anderson bowled her first career 300 game, making it the second in the Newman program’s history. She finished with a six-game total of 1,258 points, averaging 209.7.
Senior Miranda Hejny commented on what it means to her and her team to make it to nationals.
“The seniors on the team know how it feels not to make it to nationals, therefore, we used those feelings as motivation to work harder and ensure we made it this year. Instead of looking at the larger picture of doing well in all 64 games, we focused on the small steps within each game. It’s easy to forget the importance of the individual actions within each game but taking it game by game has paid off best for us as a team.”
Bowling coach Billy Murphy said, “Punching their ticket to Lincoln was a huge accomplishment. They won seven out of 12 events and finished in the top five of all the events they competed in.”
The women’s bowling team is ranked No. 4 in the country, setting a record as the highest ranked women Jets bowling team.
