Newman University invites alumni and their families to participate in entertainment, learning events, family fun and an opportunity to reconnect with fellow alumni at theNewman Alumni Weekend. The weekend of festivities kicks off Friday, June 23 and will continue through Sunday, June 25.

A few of the activities include a Pig Feast, which takes place on Friday in the Mabee Dining Center, an International Beer Sampling and campus tours. Attendees will not only have the chance to see recent additions to Eck Hall, but also the new Bishop Gerber Science Center.

Four Newman Educational Discussions, or NED Talks, will be presented by Newman faculty and alumni beginning Saturday morning. These discussions are similar to TED Talks — inspired educational experiences meant to promote lifelong learning and tie back to the Newman mission of empowering graduates to transform society.

The NED Talks include “Concussions,” by alumnus Bart Grelinger, M.D.; “Mindfulness,” by Associate Professor of Social Work Mike Duxler; “Forensics and BTK,” by alumna Shelly Steadman; and “Personal Experience and Depression,” by Mark Potter, who recently retired from being the head men’s basketball coach at Newman after 19 years.

On Saturday, Mass will be offered at 5:30 p.m. in St. John’s Chapel with songs from Alumni Chorale and Troubadours.

The Alumni Awards Ceremony will take place at 7 p.m. in the Dugan-Gorges Conference Center and is open for anyone to attend. Here, four individuals will be honored with the 2017 Alumni Awards and will officially be inducted into the honorary alumni.

Awards and recipients include:

  • Leon McNeill Distinguished Alumni Award to Lanny Gridley ‘07
  • Beata Netemeyer Service Award to Lois ‘74 and George ‘72 Kreidler
  • St. Maria De Mattias Award to Gerry Killeen ‘69
