Newman men rally for first postseason win since 2005

Mar 05, 2016

A big second half lifted the Newman men’s basketball team to its first-ever postseason victory as members of the Heartland Conference, beating second-seeded Lubbock Christian 81-79 in the league quarterfinals March 4 at the Union Multipurpose Activity Center.

The Jets’ upset is their first postseason win since they downed Huntington (Ind.) 85-76 in the first round of the NAIA National Championship on March 9, 2005.

Junior Taylor Schieber came off the bench in the second half to spark Newman. He led the offensive attack with 17 points. Senior Jalen Love also added 17 pts and his three-pointer with 2:25 to play put the seventh-seed up for good.

With the victory the Jets (17-12) extend their season. They will take on Dallas Baptist University in the Heartland Conference Tournament Semifinals March 5 at 7:30pm.
