Newman University exists for students, because of students.

In a continued effort to support their academic success, the Student Success Center has added nine student peer tutors, three career coaches and one marketing intern to its staff for the fall 2024 semester.

Peer tutors meet one-on-one with students and help cover a range of subjects: nursing, pathophysiology, anatomy, physiology, physics, biology, chemistry, algebra, geometry, trigonometry, pre-calculus, calculus 1 and 2, writing, research and rhetoric.

Peer career coaches work directly out of the career services office, acting as the front line to help students with resume reviews, mock interviews, job searches, navigating Handshake (an interactive jobs website for students and employers) and eventually building LinkedIn profiles.

Meet the peer tutors

Tutoring services are free and available for every Newman student, offered in-person by appointment or virtually 24/7. All students are encouraged to log into the Student Success Center scheduler, Accudemia, at https://newmanu.accudemia.net/login to schedule tutoring sessions and browse additional services. Students can also check out laptops from the front desk of the Student Success Center.

  • Daniel Cubias is a tutor in physics, biology and writing. His fun fact is that he doesn’t know how to tie his shoes.
  • Alysha Keck tutors pathophysiology. Fun fact: She has performed in more than 20 musicals.
  • Brandon Welch tutors in nursing, anatomy and physiology. In his free time, he enjoys swimming, skiing and going for walks. He also plays the guitar.
  • Eliana Gaytan tutors writing, research and rhetoric. A fun fact about Gaytan is that she has gone sledding on an active volcano in Sicily.
  • Hayley Stewart tutors algebra through calculus 2, general chemistry 1 and 2 and general biology 1 and 2. She studied abroad last spring and lived in Birmingham, England, for four months and visited five countries during her time there.
  • Laura Le tutors biology and chemistry and is a student-athlete on the cheer and dance team at Newman.
  • Luna Feillon tutors math. She is originally from France.
  • Natalie Meyer tutors general writing and research. She is also a student-athlete on the Newman volleyball team.
  • Monica Redondo is a math and chemistry tutor. Her fun fact is that she loves to travel.

Le, a biology major with a concentration in pre-medicine, was inspired to be a peer tutor to give students the resources she wished she had during her earlier biology and chemistry classes. She’s in her junior year.

“We didn’t really have a Student Success Center that served as a big collaborative space so now that we do it’s really nice,” she explained. “One thing I’ve loved about being a tutor is that every single time I’ve been on my shift, I’ve had a lot of students come for help.”

She added, “I feel like with tutoring there can be a stigma where students don’t want to ask for help. Here, you don’t have to feel that at all. The Student Success Center is so open to helping students that they aren’t as afraid to ask for help.”

Meet the peer career coaches

This semester’s peer career coaches are Brandon Garcia, Kaylee McNeill and Jacklyn Brokaw (not pictured).

Brandon Garcia

Garcia is a junior sociology major from Santa Barbara, California. He is a student-athlete on the men’s soccer team and his fun fact is: “I know the Krabby Patty secret formula.”

Kaylee McNeill

McNeill is a theology major and her fun fact is that “my favorite fruit is a banana.” Another fun fact is that during her freshman year, she won the TikTok Heritage Month contest.

Meet marketing intern Andrea Fuentes

Not only is senior Fuentes the marketing intern for the Student Success Center, but she is also a resident assistant and member of the Newman cheer and dance team.

Fuentes works on a project in the Student Success Center.

She is excited to support student services in this role and has some advice for students looking to get the most out of their experience at Newman.

“Participate in the activities on campus, whether it’s Student Life, HALO (Hispanic-American Leadership Organization), MCLO (Multicultural Leadership Organization) or any club at all,” Fuentes said. “Always go to Jet Friday, get a donut and catch up with people. And finally, talk with your professors, especially if you’re lost in the subject. They’re here for a reason.”

Additional resources

The Student Success Center is designed to empower and support Newman students with improved access to academic, mental health and career services.

Visitors can take advantage of several functions including the Jets Welcome Center, a soundproof testing center, two conference rooms (one of which can be reserved) and the Sacred Grounds Coffee & Café. Adaptive spaces can be customized to suit the needs of users and facilitate peer collaboration with movable chairs, tables and whiteboards.

The center also gives students an even more efficient way to take advantage of makeup exams, academic accommodations, F1 international student services, workshops, peer career coaches or counseling sessions.
