For some, scholarships and financial assistance can be the difference between attending college and opting out of higher education altogether. At Newman, there is an entire day — two days, actually — dedicated to high schoolers interviewing for the best scholarships Newman has to offer.

The first of two scholarship interview days took place on Saturday, Jan. 18. Despite a frigid temperature of 21 degrees Fahrenheit, 19 students traveled from near and far to interview for Newman University scholarships. A second scholarship interview day is scheduled for Feb. 22.

Each interview featured a mix of faculty and staff members, current Newman students and even ASC sisters, depending on the program. Georgia Drewes, senior associate director of admissions, said she was grateful for approximately 25 volunteers who helped make the day a success.

A glance into life at Newman

Interviews made up the bulk of the afternoons, but a full day of programming gave students a welcoming glimpse into life on campus. The financial aid team met with several students and parents to provide helpful resources, a hospitality area boasted cookies, snacks and refreshments, and campus tours were available for students to better picture themselves at Newman.

Over lunch, students heard from Vice President for Enrollment Management Michael Probus, faculty speaker Assistant Professor of Art Shannon Johnston and a student speaker, Kelly Lotsu-Morgan.

Lotsu-Morgan, a 2024 St. Newman full-tuition scholarship recipient, shared his story of discovering Newman by accident due to a typo

He said that now, at the beginning of his second semester at Newman, he can’t help but “pinch himself” as he walks across campus. Newman’s faith roots and highly recommended professors drew him in, and aspects like the Honors Program, chorale, STEM Club and his on-campus jobs give him a built-in sense of community.

“My professors are very helpful and open,” he said. “I also work in the Mabee Dining Center and Student Success Center and my co-workers are amazing. A few of them even attended my fall concert. I’m just so happy I get this chance to attend Newman, and I believe many of you would love it here, too.”
