Newman Athletics will host the 38th Annual Laurie Bell Memorial Jet Open golf tournament Monday, Aug. 1, at the Rolling Hills Country Club.
This charity golf tournament — the biggest fundraiser of the year for Newman Athletics — raises money to support the student-athlete experience through facilities upgrades, operations and student development.
“It’s always a fun day and we encourage anyone who wants to support Newman Athletics to get involved,” said Zane Ehling, associate athletics director for external operations.
The tournament is an 18-hole, four-person scramble with a shotgun start. Registration for the four-person scramble is slated to begin at 6:30 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. with a choice of a 7:30 a.m. or 12:30 p.m. shotgun start. Lunch will take place from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., followed by the after party and awards at 5:30 p.m.
The cost for an individual is $300 and the cost for a four-person team is $1,200. Ticket prices pay for lunch, the driving range, green fees, golf cart, refreshments and snacks on the course.
Participants must register by Friday, July 29, and are encouraged to register early as there is limited space for each session.
Teeing off for a worthy cause
Whether they’re a golfer at heart or just getting their start, the low-stakes golf tournament features several ways to support.
Teams and players can purchase a money ball for $100 that gives them an extra swing on every hole. There are also four sponsorship levels: Blue Hole Sponsor $750, Silver Hole Sponsor $1,750, Diamond Sponsor $3,000 and Gold Sponsor $5,000. To learn more about the packages, click here.
Each team of four will receive prizes for their placement. Prizes include gift cards and free entry to golf at the country club at a later date. In addition, every golfer will receive a voucher to the Callaway Concept Shop.
Along with the golf tournament, the online auction will return this year after “overwhelming success” last year, Ehling said. Items up for bid include vacation trips, tickets to special events and even a handmade item from Father Tom Welk.
The online auction will open on July 22 and close on Aug. 1, the day of the tournament. Anyone can bid and participate in the online auction whether they enter the tournament or not.
Maureen Rohleder, associate athletics director/senior woman administrator, has helped organize the Jet Open at Newman for 18 years.
“The Jet Open is the biggest event we have to make money for our department so we put a lot of time and effort into it,” she said. “It’s a great way to get out in the community and reach out and connect with our donors.”
