The Newman University Career Services team is hosting a unique one-hour networking event beginning at 5 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 30 in the Dugan-Gorges Conference Center.
You’ve heard of speed-dating, right? Individuals sitting in their designated spots around a large room, ready to tell you all about themselves in a quick, one-minute summary. The buzzer sounds and you move on to the next person.
Now envision the same energy at a speed-networking event. Imagine how much you could learn if those individuals were successful employees ready to give you a quick summary of how they turned their degrees into a career.
Newman students will experience just that at the Career Connections event.
During the span of one hour’s time, students will join a group of no more than six peers to rotate around the room and listen to the stories of seven graduates who’ve transitioned into the professional workplace. The groups will spend approximately seven minutes at each employee station, moving on to the next when the time is up. There will even be time at the end for students to network with the employers of their choice.
The best news is — ALL majors can benefit from this fast-paced networking event, said Director of Career Services and Cooperative Education Melody Head. Students will learn how to leverage their major by realizing and exploring its diversity. They will have a chance to practice their communication and networking skills. And lastly, they will be learning how different businesses operate and what they look for when hiring new employees.
This free event is not a career fair, so attendees should leave their resumes at home. But they are highly encouraged to grab a friend to join in on the fun. The setting will be informal with light snacks served. For more information, contact Head at 316-942-4291, ext. 2234 or [email protected].
