The Newman University School of Business will be kicking off the School of Business Speaker Series with an event featuring nationally recognized speaker and author David Burkus. The event will take place from noon to 2 p.m. on March 28 in the Dugan-Gorges Conference Center. This will be the first of an annual series of speakers being hosted on campus by the new School of Business.
Burkus is a best-selling author, award-winning podcaster, and management professor at Oral Roberts University. Burkus is a regular contributor to Harvard Business Review and Inc. magazine, and his work has been featured in Fast Company, The Financial Times, Bloomberg BusinessWeek, and CBS This Morning.
Dean of the School of Business Brett Andrews said that he is hopeful that Burkus’ presentation will raise awareness of the School of Business (which is relatively new), as well as help increase leadership skills of the attendees.
“[The event is] specifically for outreach to the business community, to invite them to come, and taste and see what Newman has to offer in terms of its business school and programs; and in this case, how we can help bring solutions to the Wichita business community,” Andrews said.
Burkus’ speech, “Under New Management,” mirrors the title of his latest book and discusses the idea that the best companies today are breaking the old rules.
By challenging traditional beliefs about how the business world should be run, Burkus strives to convince companies to leave behind their decades-old management practices and implement new ways to enhance productivity and morale. After exploring these ideas, audience members will walk away with evidence-based strategies and real-world examples to help them drive performance, build stronger teams, and acquire a mindset of growth.
Andrews encourages entrepreneurs, leaders, and executives in current businesses to take advantage of the opportunity to hear firsthand from Burkus on how to establish a design and foundation for their business’ future.
“This is the guy who consults with Google and Microsoft and major corporations,” Andrews said. “This is a voice that needs to be heard by the business community and we’re delighted as a school of business to be able to bring him to Wichita.”
Tickets are available to the public for $49. Attendees will receive lunch and a complimentary copy of Burkus’ book. To purchase tickets, find out about group rates, or arrange for some contact with the speaker, visit www.go.newmanu.edu/burkus.
