Newman University in Colorado Springs, Colo., participated as a sponsor for the annual Social Work Month Awards event in Denver on March 4. The event, held at the Hilton Garden Inn, was hosted by the Colorado Society for Clinical Social Work, Metropolitan State College of Denver Social Work Department, the National Association of Social Workers (NASW) Colorado Chapter, the Newman University Master of Social Work Program in Colorado Springs, and the University of Denver Graduate School of Social Work.
During the event, Newman University Social Work faculty presented Aubrey Terry, MSW, of Divide, Colo., with the 2011 Newman University MSW Alumna of the Year Award, and Monica Ibarra, LCSW, of Colorado Springs with the Distinguished Field Instructor Award.
Reggie Bicha, executive director of the Colorado Department of Human Services, served as the keynote speaker. A highlight of the annual Social Work celebration and awards ceremony was the reading of a Governor’s Proclamation signed by Colorado Governor John Hickenlooper which designated March 2011 as Colorado Social Work Month. The industry was recognized by the state of Colorado forĀ its impact through research on informing public policy, for educating socially conscious individuals to make significant differences in the world through service and leadership, and for the work they do to change customs which limit the ability of vulnerable individuals and groups to lead fulfilling and productive lives.
