Newman University will honor alumni who graduated with a science- or health care-related degree with the “Scrubs and White Coat Tip-off” event, scheduled for Feb. 16 in the Gorges Atrium and O’Shaughnessy Sports Complex on the Newman campus, 3100 McCormick in Wichita. The event will include activities before and at halftime of the Newman Jets men’s basketball game against St. Edwards University.
“We thought this would be a great way to recognize the many Newman graduates with science or medical-related degrees who are serving the community in hospitals, doctor’s offices, clinics and other facilities,” said Newman Director of Alumni Relations Sarah Cundiff. “Newman has played a significant role in training health care professionals over many years – I don’t know if people in the Wichita area realize how many local health care professionals are products of Newman programs. Our programs are also highly respected, and the university has an impressive record of pre-med graduates who are accepted into medical schools.”
Newman University offers degree programs in biology, chemistry, biochemistry, forensic science, healthcare science, nursing, occupational therapy assistant, radiologic technology, respiratory care, sonography, and nurse anesthesia, as well as pre-professional programs in dentistry, medicine, occupational therapy, optometry, pharmacy, physical therapy, and veterinary science. In previous years the university and its predecessor institutions offered additional health care-related programs. A total of 3,401 Newman alumni have earned a science or health care degree since 1955, and work or have worked as a health care professional.
The Feb. 16 event kicks off with a reception at 6:30 p.m. in Gorges Atrium, next to the O’Shaughnessy Sports Complex. All science and health care alumni who wear their scrubs or white coats will then be admitted free to the game, along with their accompanying family members. The game begins at 7:30 p.m. in Fugate Gymnasium inside the O’Shaughnessy Sports Complex.
Those wearing scrubs and white coats are also encouraged to drop their business cards in a bowl for a prize drawing. During halftime of the game, science- and health care-degree alumni will be invited on court for a brief recognition ceremony and an on-court group photo. The winners of the business card drop will also be announced.
In addition to the alumni activities and the men’s basketball game on Feb. 16, the Newman women’s basketball team will take on the St. Edwards women’s team at 5:30 p.m. in Fugate Gymnasium.
