According to Medium.com, the average shopper uses a single-use plastic bag for 12 minutes. After those 12 minutes, it can take up to 1,000 years for a plastic bag to decompose.

The Newman Laudato Si planning committee will help bring new life to plastic bags with its spring service event Cocoa, Cookies and Quilting on Wednesday, Feb. 1, from 1 to 4 p.m. in the Dugan Library.

Guests will learn how to knit grocery bags into sleeping mats, which will then be donated to homeless shelters in Wichita. Hot cocoa and cookies will be served for all volunteers.

Plastic bag drop-off boxes are located throughout the Newman campus. All community members are encouraged to participate.

What is Laudato Si?

As a Laudato Si’ university, Newman University made a commitment on November 14, 2021, to participate in Vatican Dicastery for Promoting Integral Human Development 7-year Platform to promote and implement Pope Francis’ vision of Integral Ecology found in his encyclical Laudato Si’.
