Record number of top Newman scholarships offered

After a record number of high school students applied to its 2023 Scholarship Interview Days, Newman University has offered 135 of its top scholarships to participants of this year’s competition. Some students were offered multiple awards.

Five individuals were chosen to receive Newman’s most prestigious scholarship, the St. John Henry Newman Scholarship, for the upcoming 2023-2024 academic year.

The interviews were held Jan. 21 and 28.

The St. Newman scholarship is a full-tuition annual award renewable for four years, valued at at least $135,000. Applicants are required to complete an online application, which includes the submission of a personal resumé, a picture, two professional or academic references and a 30-60 second video explaining why they want to attend Newman University. They also took part in one of two interview days in January.

Applicants must have at least a 3.9 cumulative high school GPA to apply. St. Newman scholars must complete 32 hours of community service each semester.

The 2023-24 St. Newman Scholars are:

April Burnett, of Mulvane, Kansas, and Mulvane High School; major: psychology

Anna Lobmeyer, of Garden City, Kansas, and Garden City High School; major: secondary education history/government

Grecia Nunez-Palomares, of Wichita, Kansas, and Wichita North High School; major: biomedical science

Aiden Rea, of Topeka, Kansas, and Washburn Rural High School; major: business management

Maya Watkins, of Agency, Missouri, and East Buchanan C-1 High School; major: biology/pre-medicine

Monsignor McNeill Scholars

The university also selected 41 students to receive its prestigious Monsignor Leon McNeill Scholarship for the upcoming 2023-2024 academic year. The scholarship is an annual award renewable for four years, valued at a total of $80,000.

Applicants are required to complete an online application, which includes the submission of a personal resumé, a picture, names of potential references and a 30-60 second video explaining why they want to attend Newman University.

The Monsignor Leon McNeill Scholarship is named for the first president of the university. The scholarship requires that recipients have at least a 3.9 cumulative high school GPA. Recipients must complete 32 hours of community service each semester.
