Visitors to the new NewmanU.Edu website can expect improved performance in security and accessibility — all with a polished new look.

Web technology specialist Daniel Murphy recently tackled the challenge of a full website redesign, his third since he was hired as a Newman employee 10 years ago. The website was revamped with the help of committee feedback from multiple departments across campus.

Because the previous version of Joomla was no longer receiving security updates, Murphy said it was important to update the existing design so the core would update as well.

“Under the hood of this website’s redesign, we’ve built it on top of the latest version of Joomla to take advantage of the latest technology stack,” Murphy said.

Several pages and links were simplified, including the main menu to improve application conversions and giving, all while maintaining navigational features. Additionally, the site has enhanced user experiences across all devices for all users, including Spanish speakers and people with visual impairments.

Wow! I love the updated redesign. It’s completely different — refreshing, clean and easy to navigate.

“Joomla 5, its multi-language support and what is called Workflows allows us to create custom rule-based decisions to make the content approval process more structured and documented,” Murphy said.

Additionally, the Google search function within the NewmanU.Edu website was replaced with Joomla’s more responsivee native search.

In Murphy’s words, “the website will never truly be finished.” He is now working with a mini-redesign committee to revamp the academics section.

“This is a huge part of the site and will greatly improve the experience of potential students who are looking to find all of the quality programs we have to offer,” he added.
