Tasty Tuesdays: celebrating food and fellowship

Sep 24, 2018

Fellowship and good food are some key ingredients to a happy life — and both just happen to be on the menu for “Tasty Tuesday” at Newman University.

Tasty Tuesday is a monthly event held by Student Support Services on the second Tuesday of each month. The event began two years ago as a way for employees in Student Support Services to get to know students, specifically new students, on a more casual level.

The department seeks to provide for all students at Newman University sound and relevant career guidance, personalized and insightful academic counseling, effective personal counseling and quality assistance with the learning process.

Coordinator of Early Intervention and Testing Services Debbie Haslam explained that Tasty Tuesdays are “a way for us to get to spend more time with students. We see it as a way for the students to get to know us as well, and get more comfortable with our office. It isn’t easy to ask for help and we know this. If a student needs extra help, it is much easier to go and meet with someone you already know on a casual level than it is to go ask for help from a complete stranger.”

Each Tasty Tuesday has a theme. September’s theme was apple cobbler and for October it will be monkey bread.

“We have had nachos, cupcakes, pumpkin-flavored treats and other tasty foods as our themes,” said Haslam.

Along with Tasty Tuesday, Student Support Services has added two new events that continue their objective of getting to know the students and enjoying yummy food.

“On Oct. 12, we will have our very first Student Support Services potluck lunch. Join us in the Alumni Center for lunch from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. We are scheduled for a second potluck lunch in the spring on Thursday, Feb. 28. This will also be held in the Alumni Center from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.,” Haslam added.
